Vega – Worst Character in Street Fighter IV

It has been almost two months since the release of CAPCOM’s Street Fighter 4 for the PC. The game was a hit in the office as we do gauntlet type “change the loser” (or challenge the winner for those who find the first statement too offensive, LOSERS!) game.

So everyone assessed their all-time favorite characters. For me, it was Cammy. Well, after a few rounds of playing, I gave up on her and went to my second favorite, Sagat. Turns out Sagat is a beast in SF4. A 3-hit generic combo of Ryu is more or less equal to one CHP (Crouching-Hard-Punch) of Sagat!

As we had played for several weeks, we’ve noticed that two of our better players only use Shotokans or more specifically Ryu. So it turned into an office joke whenever the two square off. People would say “OMG! I was so surprised, I never thought it would be a Ryu vs Ryu matchup!” and the likes.

In order to have some changes in the matchups, we established “Alien Week” which simply means you would have to use a character that you do not use ordinarily. So the Goukens became Rufus, the Ryu became Blanka, the Sagats became Dhalsim, and the Zangiefs became Ryu (LOL!).

Since I also have to choose a new one, I decided to use the least played character in the office, Vega.

(MORE AFTER THE BREAK)

First off, I would have to state that I have mediocre skills in fighting games. I just don’t have the hand dexterity to pull off 720 degrees super atomic pile drivers consistently. I can do a charge back Sonic Boom moves but not a Down-Up Flash Kick (takes a lot of try). These facts alone should have turned me off with Vega. But still, I chose Vega as I have been amazed with his moves back in SFII.

So I played on solo mode in medium difficulty to practice. I always lose to anyone with fireballs. No matter the character as long as it has fireballs, I just can’t pull off his moves in a hurry.

So finally back in the office, I tried using Vega. People were surprised as to why I am using the 2nd lowest tiered character (I didn’t know this fact till I used him).

After a few rounds, I agreed. Vega is possibly the worst character ever made. I would pick Dan over him any day. His hard to pull off moves are easily countered by normal moves. His rolling attack takes a second to start, A FREAKING SECOND window for everyone to counter or block. His Swandive is mediocre in damage and a huge risk to get shoryuken-ed. His somersault kick loses to just about any special move.

Obviously, when he loses his claw, a huge part of his range is lost. What I didn’t know is that when he loses his mask, 50% of his defense is lost. WTF! And he even has a move where he throws his claw and his mask (which consumes a single bar in your Super Meter!) away! It’s like Vega was subjected to character-assassination by CAPCOM.

Oh and just in case you’re thinking that I don’t use it right, well, other people in the office began using Vega as a sort of a challenge and they didn’t fare better. On my count, there were only two Vega victories. On both counts, they just didn’t know what to expect. As soon as a rematch was set, Vega lost horribly.

Wow…vega throws off his mask and claw…wtf?!?!? But he was so cool on street fighter 2! But then again there’s always a broken character in a fighting game.
